Milwaukee School of Engineering Perfusion Program M.S. in Perfusion

Overview

At MSOE, we’ve been educating perfusionists since 1983.  Students in the perfusion program will see a wide variety of cases, which may include implantation of Ventricular Assist Devices, transplant procedures and procedures using ECMO (extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation). Students act as the primary perfusionist in over 100 cases—all in the Milwaukee area—including a strong pediatric experience. Simulation will also be used to prepare students. Research and statistical techniques are also core to the program, which are critical for completing research projects and understanding scientific literature.

MSOE’s M.S. in Perfusion program prepares students in the following clinical areas:

  • Cardiopulmonary bypass
  • Patient monitoring
  • Blood conservation (cell salvage, modified ultrafiltration and plasmapharesis)
  • Intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP)
  • Ventricular assist devices (VAD)
  • Total artificial heart placement (TAH)
  • Selection of equipment and biomaterials
  • Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)

Curriculum Format

MSOE’s Master of Science in perfusion program starts in the fall of each academic year and is designed for full-time graduate students. It can be completed over six consecutive quarters, provided all program requirements are met. Academic courses meet on campus. Students are required to provide their own transportation to the various affiliated clinical sites—most are located within 25 miles of campus.

General Requirements

General requirements for all graduate programs at MSOE include the following:

  1. Completion of a baccalaureate degree in a discipline appropriate for the graduate program to which the applicant seeks admission.
  2. Official transcripts sent directly from all colleges and/or universities previously attended. Fees may be assessed for the translation of each transcript and supporting documentation that is in a language other than English.
  3. An academic record that indicates potential achievement in graduate studies.
  4. Letters of recommendation as required by the program to which you are applying.
  5. For applicants whose native language is not English, language proficiency must be demonstrated by one of the following methods:
    1. An average score of 7.0 must be obtained on the IELTS (our preferred test). The band score in each IELTS test component must be 6.0 or higher.
    2. We will accept a TOEFL exam. The total score must be 90 and the level in each test component must be 21 or higher.
    3. We will waive the IELTS/TOEFL requirement if:
      • You have successfully completed the English as a Second Language program from MSOE or one of our approved partners.
      • Your undergraduate degree is from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education that utilizes English as the primary language (official transcript required).
    4. There are additional application requirements for international students.
  6. If a student is a permanent resident of the U.S., then a copy of a permanent resident’s card is a requirement for admission.
  7. International student applicants who will require a SEVIS Form I-20 issued by MSOE for visa application purposes must submit a certified bank statement or notarized MSOE Financial Certificate, detailing the availability of finances for the first year of study (including tuition and living expenses). If transferring from another institution that has issued immigration documents, an MSOE Transfer Form must also be submitted.
